I’m analytical, logical and deterministic. Yet I know that I’m missing out on a whole quadrant of knowing. Specifically, the poetic, the prophetic and the mystical.

I’ve been listening to a podcast called Commoners Communion Podcast, hosted by Strahan Coleman, and have been very impressed at his gifting in the area of poetry and prayer. Episode 1 is his introduction to the importance of poetry to God and to the church. Ephesians 2:10 says that we are God’s workmanship, which is translated from the Greek word ‘poeima’ from which we derive our English word ‘poem’. Paul is actually saying that we are God’s poetry.

Strahan makes the comment that poetry has been a part of faith beliefs for centuries, and that the Bible has poetry throughout the whole text, especially in the books of the prophets and apocalyptic writing. That was the past, and now we live in an age where knowledge and cognitive beliefs are seen as the highest value.

I wonder what church would be like if, as well as prose and motivational speaking, we encouraged the poetic gifts of insight, lament, love and prophesy . I’m not referring to judgemental messages, or calls for repentance which is how prophesy is currently viewed, but the type of prophesy that illuminates God’s love and desire for relationship with us. The type that calls us, not drives us. The type that tells us who we could be, not who we should be.

What would it look like to have a Poet’s Corner in your Sunday service? Are your poets and songwriters encouraged to contribute?

Since God is relational by nature and being, I suggest that we are missing out by not engaging the heart through these ancient practices.

            5/5 - (1 vote)

I’ll be the first person to put my hand up and say that I live in my head.
