And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.

Colossians 1:18

Thought of the Day:

In yesterday’s verse, we saw that “before” can mean pre-eminence. Today’s verse supports this thought as Paul describes Christ as having supremacy over all creation. Christ was in the beginning with God, and in Jesus became the first to experience God’s fulfilled life, being free from the ties to our corrupted world through his death and resurrection. He is the head, and the church is his body. In this verse, “head” refers to the origin or source, not the control centre, so Paul reminds us that Jesus is the source of life to his church. He is our creator, sustainer and continual source of life.

Action of the Day:

While you are eating a meal today, consider how this food is supplying life and health to your body. It gets metabolised and nourishes every cell, and in so doing, gives life to your body. Let that awareness remind you that Christ sustains every aspect of your life today.

Prayer of the Day:

Supreme Life-Giver, I thank you for being the source of my life and wellbeing. You are first from the dead, and first in my life. I live because you live in me.
