In Gold We Trust
Our Western Christianity has very successfully separated Sunday from the rest of the week, or in other words, put God into a box that doesn’t interfere with the things we want to do. This includes how we use money and the value we place on it. Other faiths fully involve God in every aspect of their daily lives, resulting in a spiritual practices that are incorporated into daily activities.
I know the title of this post is corny, and is taking a small dig at the US currency which has “In God we trust” printed on every denomination. However, it is a subject that I want to discuss from the perspective that giving can be a spiritual discipline or practice.
Spiritual practices are habits and routines that we can incorporate into our lives for the express purpose of including and acknowledging God in and through our lived experience. As Christians, we believe that God is in all things and that there is no separation between the sacred and the secular. In light of that, everything we do in our daily living can be used as a reminder of God’s involvement in our lives. To that end, the phrase “In God we trust” has the potential to be an amazing reminder that we should be involving God in our expenses. The Bible says “God owns the cattle on a thousand hills”, and elsewhere, that “the earth is the Lord’s and everything in it”, so we are actually spending God’s money!
Here are some ways to use money as a spiritual practice:
- Thank God for the provision each time you make a purchase (practicing thankfulness)
- Pray for the person who will receive the money that you are spending (practicing consideration)
- Recognise that you received the money from another source, so you are part of a greater chain of being. (practicing mindfulness)
- Consider blessing someone with a gift of money or material goods, not simply make a purchase which will benefit yourself. (practicing generosity)
Leave a comment on other ways that we could use money as a spiritual practice in our daily lives.
