God Doesn’t Need our Votes
As New Zealand heads into another election year, it is worth noting that Jesus was born into a very undemocratic and much more dangerous society than our Western society. 2000 years ago, Israel was ruled by a tyrant (King Herod) and a puppet (Pontius Pilot), and under the control power-hungry religious leaders. Yet God did not seem to be worried about the political landscape. God seemed to think it was a perfect time for the Christ to come in human form.
Given that God was unfazed by the politics of the day, perhaps we are missing something. Perhaps our focus on saving our (Christian) culture by means of politics is not how God works at all. God is not running for election, so does not need or want our votes. Are we are afraid that God cannot achieve God’s eternal purposes if we don’t vote the right man or woman into power? I recently heard someone say “God’s character is on the line!”, as if God was not big secure enough to cope with negative opinions or incorrect theology, and that Christians have a moral duty to speak out in opposition to everything deemed unChristian.
I believe that the Kingdom of Heaven on earth is being damaged by Christians who focus on taking political sides instead of being salt and light and love in this hurting world. I have seen Christians absorb and then propagate false information (alt-facts), call into question the salvation of other Christians, throw verbal rocks and proof-texts at others, and generally be a very poor example of the love of God in action. It disturbs me. But then I remember that God is bigger than my concerns, and God’s purposes will be realised in spite of my misgivings about how good, bad, or ugly the Body of Christ looks.
If God loves all people and the work of the Cross is complete, then I have nothing to worry about. The Bible says that they (the world) will know we are Christians NOT by our political vote, or our theology, but by our LOVE.
