The First and Second Coming
God became human as a baby, hidden from the world but in plain sight, and remained on the fringe of society his whole life, only being accepted by those who were also on the fringe. The mainliners; the socially connected, the religiously correct, the politically cunning didn’t see him – they didn’t want to see him because he wasn’t from within their own paradigm. They wanted a leader who would advance their own power or social position. Even the disciples wanted this.
Are we any different? Really?
As believers, we ooh and aah over God’s humility to come as a helpless baby, but we do all we can to not be helpless, to not live on the fringe, (myself included).
We are living on the other side of Jesus’s life, death, resurrection and ascension, looking for the time of His second coming. Most of us are expecting a ruling king to arrive and set everything right, but that is exactly what Jesus didn’t do during his ministry, so why do we think He will be different when he comes again? Sure, there are verses that talk about Jesus bringing all into submission, but we always read these verses with a domination mindset.
What if we are as wrong with this as the Pharisees, religious leaders and general Jewish population were 2000 years ago? They were genuine and sincere in their beliefs, but they were wrong. As long as we hold onto a domination view, we run the risk of being equally wrong about His second coming.
